Commitment to Diversity

Stepping back in the dark

The Tower

As a publication we collectively decided to not cover the overturning of Roe v. Wade until we had a solid story angle and could get sources on the record on such a controversial topic. The hardest part of this story was finding student opinion that supported the overturning of Roe v. Wade. If I did find someone who supported the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision, they did not want to go on the record. I recall reaching out to about five students before landing on the two which ended up being quoted. I wrote this story relatively early in my career on The Tower, so it was a learning opportunity for me to write about controversial topics at the national level with a local viewpoint.

For this double-byline story, I interviewed Jay Kalpan, Courtney Johnson, Valerie St. John, Lex Willson and Joshua Lemanski.

The importance of black history in Grosse Pointe

The Tower

The Grosse Pointe community has an unfortunate history of redlining and racial tension at the border with the City of Detroit. These facts, to most students, go unnoticed. With this piece I aimed to make students aware of restrictive covenants. This was something that my parents shared with me since the deed of our home from 1922 included a restrictive covenant. Many families in Grosse Pointe are not aware of this history, or do not discuss it, making writing this piece that much more impactful.
