Wayne County High School students' art on display at the Guardian Building after DIA stint
The Detroit Free Press
After going to the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) Museum in mid July, I knew I wanted to try to highlight the wonderful work that the DIA does. From the exhibit that I was set to write about, I took photos of the pieces that interested me most and contacted the artists. When crafting my interview questions, I knew I didn't want to only highlight the exhibit, but the process the artists went through to create their pieces. After interviewing the student artists, the piece was shaped to be more focused on how the students create their art than the exhibit itself. This is an example of how, as a journalist, you never know how the story will end when starting.

Don’t think twice about Timothee Chalamet’s performance

“Write what you are passionate about” is advice my AP Language teacher told me when sitting down to write every creative writing assignment. I took this advice into my journalistic writing as well. I had been looking forward to the release of “A Complete Unknown" for months, and I knew I wanted to write the review from the perspective of a Bob Dylan fan. In the last few months, and in this piece, I have been attempting to find new and creative ways to write opinions that are personal to me. When writing, I took into account every thought and every emotion I had while watching this movie - trying to reach what matters to readers.

Charli XCX: BRAT summer
The Tower

I wrote this review over the summer mostly because I could not keep myself away from my keyboard. I was told by my mentor at the Detroit Free Press to keep perpetually writing because that was the only way your skills improve. This piece is more social commentary than an album review. I drew inspiration from social media - even when scrolling through TikTok or Instagram, I am constantly trying to come up with new story angles. I try to stay out of opinionated political stories considering I cover mainly news, but I wanted to find a way to form an unbiased comment on how pop culture impacts politics. After visiting the Michigan Daily and talking to the music/arts desk, I got the advice to not break down an album song by song, but how the piece is cohesive. This was my first album review after hearing that advice, and I think it was successful.
